Customer Reviews

Works well for a newbie like me This is my first Straight edge so I can't really compare it to others. I picked this one for the price and reviews. I find it to work well, at little awkward in my hands sometimes but maybe that is because I am not use to holding one? I won't really know until I try another. I am happy with this one as my first one though I figure by the time I am through the 100 blades I will be good enough to move up to another one. I will say this I saw one review that said the blades are not sharp enough. I differ on this opinion because I had gotten over confident with this razor lately and it put me back into my place quick when I slashed one side of my face so bad you would think I was trying to make myself look like the joker. Needless to say I went back to acting like it was my first time with this razor after that. So great for beginners like me and make sure not to get too cocky with it because it will come back and bite you. 5Very good selection for those new to straight razor shaving I bought this razor because I've had long time issues trying to get a decent shave and with razor burn preventing me from shaving as often as I often need in order to avoid a sloppy appearance. I decided to venture into the world of straight razor shaving on a recommendation, and this razor has been perfect for my needs.Let's be honest, straight razors are expensive as Hell. If you are experienced in straight razor shaving and are looking for a quality straight razor, this probably won't be the item for you. But for the sake of getting acquainted with the art of straight razor shaving, this is a pretty good option. Who wants to spend over $100 on a straight razor (not to mention a honing stone and a stropping belt) when you aren't sure the whole process is going to be for you? At least, with an item like this you can experiment without having to spend a small fortune. You still get a much better shave than any safety razor, and now that I've been getting the hang of the process I have indeed found an improvement in my issue with razor burn and ingrown hairs. The Shark blades are well enough. I usually replace the blade after each shave, because they are cheap enough to replace. Though I've seen alot that says that there are better blades depending on what your particular needs are (some are more aggressive than others), so I'm going to experiment. Personally, I like the fact that I can use this razor with a variety of blades to determine which better suit me.Even if I never graduate to a higher quality straight razor, the replacement blades for this thing are alot cheaper than your typical Mach 3 or even lower end disposables. I just ordered a pack of 100 for $5 a couple days ago. What other alternatives do you have to get 3-6 months worth of razors for only $5? I can't give this a 5 star rating because there are certainly much better quality options as straight razors go. But for its purposes as an economical entry level straight razor, this item is very good overall. 4Great Little Shaver! I stopped using a Straight last year because My DOVO just wouldn't keep an edge for the entire shave. Maybe I was honing it wrong, maybe my stropping was off, maybe Jupiter was not quite aligned with Mars...I dunno. I got tired of the maintenance hassle and still not getting a decent shave.I have been using a DE for a very good Baby Butt shave. I used this Parker as soon as I got it. It was great overall. I did have a couple of little nicks, but that was because I haven't used a straight in a year or so. The end result was a much smoother face than I was getting with my DE, and that was pretty smooth let me tell you.I had none of the issues that have been posted here so I guess I have been very, very lucky or their quality got better.- The plastic scale is SOLID. Some reviews made it sound to me like it was bendable, crackable and barely hung onto the razor. Not so! Very solid scale and a solid rivet to the tang with no hint of pending doom.- The blade, shank and tang all line up with the scale. Nothing touches, makes contact or interferes with the opening and closing of the razor.- The scale and blade are tightly held together so the scale goes where you want it to and stays there.- The blade was incredibly easy to load, I did it in under 30 seconds. Came with instructions and it worked perfectly, everything lines up.- The copper points line up perfectly when closing the blade.Maybe the company heard all of the comments here and tightened up their quality control?I have one criticism which is why it gets 4 stars and not 5. It is a bit small. By that I mean the length from the tang to the tip of the blade seems almost an inch shorter than a traditional straight. And it is lighter, although it has enough weight. Also remember that there is not as much cutting surface as there is with a normal straight so adjust accordingly.Gave the smoothest face I've had in years. I did finish up with a third pass with my DE on a setting of 1, but it wasn't really necessary. I do that with any straight.I would normally recommend a person just get a straight if you want to start, but this is so cost effective, it will give you a good idea of what you're in for without all the maintenance. But it is NOT the same as using a straight, similar but not the same. So don't judge straights solely on your experience with this inexpensive blade holder. Take it for what it's worth. If you can train yourself to get a good shave with this little guy, you're almost all the way there for a straight. Just remember the maintenance you are taking on when you spend $300.00 on a blade, Strop and honing stone. It's like buying a cute puppy, but you have to dedicate yourself to all it takes to keep that puppy healthy for the next 15 years. Investing in a straight is like that. I never did get the hang of it...I may try again someday. 4My first straight razor As stated above this was my first straight razor. I used the Amazon ratings to make my choice. Those, and the fact that I did not want to learn to grind and strop a razor. I dont have that kind of time. Im 44, worked outside and in the rocky mountain weather for most of my life. My beard eats most razors. When I decided to try a razor like this I did alot of research on how to use these things. Keeping your face warm and wet is the key here. That and a steady hand. Yes I get nicks. Yes the aftershave burns. But once you get over the idea that you are putting the sharpest thing you have ever held to your throat, (unless you are a surgeon) it becomes a great tool for a great shave. It also feels like you are taking a bit of time to do some man-pampering. This cannot be rushed. You have to follow the old ways to get it right. My razor is great. the blades it came with are sharp and hold an edge for around 10 shaves. I have no problem at all giving this five stars for value and quality. Good shaving to you if you buy this razor. Follow the old ways of hot face and warm lather and keep a steady hand! 5Closest Shave, Excellent Precision, saves a lot of money in the long run! First off, let me start by saying my facial hair grows rather quickly and being an artist, I enjoy changing my beard and goatee styles throughout the year. I used to shave with disposable Gillette razors, which was a big waste of money and lacked the precision I was looking for. I ended up doing some research, and realized it was time to make a switch. I bought a badger brush, brush stand, Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood shaving cream and the Parker SRW Straight Edge Razor (close to $40 altogether). This is my first (and so far only) Straight Edge Razor. The first shave was as if I was donating blood to my sink but the end result was worth the struggle. It took a few shaves learning the discipline and proper technique on using the razor without getting any nicks/cuts, but I got the technique down and it has become a really enjoyable and fun experience. The precision is phenomenal and I look forward to every time I shave knowing I can shave with confidence with lining up my beard. I warn first time users, make sure you at least watch some videos on YouTube on how to properly handle any straight razors so that you don't accidentally cut your face up and end up walking around looking like you got into a fight with some ninjas. The key is to take your time and let the weight of the razor do the work; rushing can become your worst enemy. Once you have polished your shaving technique, you will be rewarded with an overwhelming, seductive, smooth face.Though getting started cost me around $40-$50, in the long run it is much cheaper buying replaceable blades (100 blades for less than $10) instead of buying disposable razors (18 razors for around $12-$15) and shaving cream in a tube.I also bought a Parker 99R Safety Razor not too long ago. The Parker 99R Safety Razor gets the job done; a much closer shave than disposable razors, and better for gents/ladies that are in a hurry since the technique is much easier to learn than the SRW. In comparison, the Parker SRW Straight Edge Razor is an even closer shave and has superior precision than the Parker 99R Safety Razor, but takes patience to master the skill. I hope the review helps, thanks for reading! 5From Double Edge to Single Edge Before diving into a $100-$200+ straight edge purchase, I figured I'd test the waters with this, which can use your blades (snapped in half) if you already use a double edged safety razor. Of course, since this comes with 100 blades, it's going to be a while before you'd need to do that. I decided on this one over the SR1 because I liked the look of it online. I'm starting to realize Parker products can really be hit or miss... and the quality of this one is a miss. The plastic handle has the marks from where it was held while under manufacture (dents, basically), doesn't seem lined up well where it comes together, and some of the black paint was already worn off of the metal.I don't want to judge it for the shave quality as I've only shaved with a straight razor twice now, but from my research, the Feather Artist Club (particularly SS) and real (permanent blade) straight razors are apparently more forgiving. That's reassuring if I plan to keep it up, as I've cut myself up a little (no serious bleeding yet, but I didn't dare try against the grain) so I'm thinking if I can master this thing, my next, higher quality, straight razor should be a cake walk. As of now, I'll probably stick with the DE safety razors for weekdays. 3Great Beginner Piece This straight razor was my final step into "shaving-adulthood". I went from being a member of a shave club that charges $1 per month, to a safety razor & soap kit, to upgrading the brush and soap, and finally to this.I will say first and foremost, there is nothing like a clean, straight razor shave. The experience is something you HAVE to enjoy...pumping money into shaving for the purpose of saving money on shaving foam and blades won't suit you here. Financial savings is offset by the time commitment undertaken to provide yourself this service. Face preparation, lathering, and the actual multi-pass shave are all luxurious and relaxing experiences. This isn't something you can barrel through and expect positive, baby-butt resultsOn to the product: The product is machined stainless steel. The razor is a 2 piece mechanism, similar to scissors. What appear to be brass pins provide seating for the blades. When moved to close, the brass pins fit into holes on the opposite half, and a latch secures the 2 pieces together. The provided Shark blades fit very well inside the razor and provide a very limited reveal, reducing severity of facial nicks (oh, and you will...)Really, the only reason I'd consider looking to go a different direction, is the handle. While aesthetically pleasing, the imbalance of weight between the razor and the handle makes it more difficult for my larger hands to flip and maneuver the blade end. Walking into this completely green, I had no idea that weight in something you're unlikely to directly interface with (handle), would make a difference. I currently have a couple copper/nickel weights super glued to the handle. I noticed the change immediately.Bottom line: Certainly do not regret buying as an introduction to straight razor shaving. Fully intend to find one with a more weighted handle within the next year 4Perfect for novice and experienced shavers! Plus a few tips for beginners. This is just perfect as far I am concerned. Unless you are a connoisseur, I see no need for anything more than this. Let start by saying I bought this when I had no experience using such handles to shave. I had to replace it after about a year ONLY because I carelessly packaged it in luggage and the plastic handle cracked. One may say "I'll get the stainless SR1 to avoid that problem" DON'T do it! I tried it as a replacement... it is useless, awful design. You can see my review on the SR1 for more info.Bottom line is... now that I am more experienced... I am convinced that the balance and control on this is sufficient as long as your skills are matching. I can't imagine needing anything much more substantial... perhaps something a bit more heavy, and heavy duty is desirable... but I wasn't interested in getting a pure straight-edge (because of maintenance and cost) and most other similar handles (and there are not many to choose from that I can see... didn't seem worth the extra, AND after my experience with the SR1 I decided not to chance another manufacturer or model.)Some quick notes to the beginner: 1. Use shaving soap! Do not use regular shaving cream! Regular shaving cream will not work... you are better off making a fine lather of ivory than using shaving cream. 2. Let the razor glide... do not apply excessive or nearly any pressure! The term "glide" never meant so much until you try a handle like this... it means almost nothing in the commercials for disposables. HINT: if you feel resistance, any feedback at all stop taking the swipe and start a new one... you are losing the glide. If you feel like you bumped something but it didn't hurt... you will probably find you made a cut. 3. Following from 2... have a styptic pencil on hand for those little cuts, very handy to stop the bleeding. 4. If you make a cut don't freak out or give up. Minor cuts may bleed quite a bit... even if they are tiny... use the pencil to stop them, and you shouldn't have to worry about scarring with smaller cuts. You will cut yourself especially in the beginning. 5. Remember why you did this... it is about the closest shave you can get, and a fraction of the cost of trendy disposables... and it makes for great conversation. Once you get the technique down... you will use it for life. It may take you 15-20 minutes your first couple times... it did for me... now I can do it in under 10 with minimal to no cuts. 6. Oh yah- in addition to getting the proper shaving soap, you really ought to get a proper brush for applying it (and a bowl). If you are concerned about cost or if you are going to stick with this... I included among other links... a link to a great starter kit... it includes soap, a brush, and a bowl. The soap is good, the bowl just fine... I can't imagine needing another, the brush... is good for starters... but it is poorly made and will fall apart over time.I also include links for replacement good replacement soap, and a better brush.kit (great for beginners)http://www.amazon.com/Van-Der-Hagen-Premium-Shave/dp/B001A3HPT0/ref=pd_sim_hpc_1soaphttp://www.amazon.com/Conk-Worlds-Famous-Shaving-Weight/dp/B000MXGMHU/ref=pd_sim_hpc_3brushhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BWNR9A/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00styptichttp://www.amazon.com/Clubman-Styptic-Pencil-0-33-812000/dp/B00112WRB6 (these are also available at Walgreens).Feel free to email me any questions about how to shave... I self-taught myself, and got it down really good. There are some write-ups people have done online... but they miss some things. I plan on doing one of my own. 5First time with a straight edge I think I may come to love it. Only tried it for the first time this past weekend, giving him his weekly headshave. We've gone through lots of different methods, various shavers, seeking the closest shave that makes his skin as smooth as a baby's bottom. I was a little nervous at first, made sure to have a stiptic pencil on hand, but didn't need it. Oh, there was that one teeny hairline cut that hardly had any blood at all. I started by shaving totally with the grain of the hair growth, then went back against the grain for closeness. I liked being able to clean the blade completely from time to time: many shavers are difficult to clear, especially if you're using one of the new gel-type lubricating creams that cling inside the shaver even when you rinse under hot water. Currenlty using Jack Black Beard Lube Conditioning Shave. Got really really close to a perfect shave, although I did wimp out at the end and finish with our regular Merkur razor and Feather brand blades. I was a little timid about pressing in for the last bit of hair shaft. But I'll keep at it and see if I can perfect my technique. Advisories welcomed. 4A reasonable product for the price Having never used a straight edge razor prior to this, I cannot comment on how this product compares to a real straight razor, or other disposable shavette razor systems. I can attest to the fact that a straight edge razor like this one delivers a closer shave as compared to any multi-blade disposable razor or electric razor I have ever used. For reference purposes, I have used the following: Gillette twin blade razors (I believe they were called "Titanium" back in the day, but who remembers), Gillette Mach 3 razors, Gillette Fusion 4 blade razors, numerous off-brand razors in a pinch (like CVS brand or Walgreens Brand) as well as plain old single blade Bic razors. On the electric front, I've used both Braun 7 series and 5 series and a Norelco. All of the electric razors were quite expensive - easily near $200 a piece, not some cheap $15 infomercial product or something you find at the checkout stand. All of the aforementioned products are inferior to a disposable straight edge razor. As to the product itself:Other reviewers have commented on the poor quality of this product and to some degree I would agree with them, but more on that in a moment. As a note, I have no interest in paying any more to shave my face than necessary whilst not leaving my face sore, bleeding, and terrible looking. With that in mind, I purchased this razor because I have been plagued since I began shaving over a decade ago with daily razor burn no matter the razor or the shaving cream. I have a thick beard with coarse whiskers and the whiskers grow in about 4 different directions depending on their location on my face, which makes shaving a constant pain to keep from shaving against the grain. This razor has proved to accomplish substantially better the job of a close shave without destroying my face in the process. In terms of the quality of this shavette, it is by no means the finest, but it is not entirely poorly made either. As another reviewer pointed out, the metal blade holder on mine is slightly misaligned to the handle, such that the metal razor holder catches on the handle as you attempt to store the blade away, but to me, this is at most, a minor fault. The unit otherwise seems robustly built enough for the price. The steel the blade holder is made out of is stainless, although after having used it for only a few weeks, I cannot comment on the quality of the steel. The rivet that holds the handle to the blade holder is solid feeling. The handle itself is light and has some minor marks from where the two halves were joined during production which could have been removed with a light sanding, but the fault is purely aesthetic. In terms of function, the unit could hardly be easier to use, so no faults there. Perhaps the best way to sum up this product's quality is that it would be a less-than-ideal gift, but as something I purchased for myself simply to get a better shave, its absolutely fine. To achieve the most from this razor, I would imperatively urge a prospective user to purchase a badger hair brush and some quality shaving soap to accompany this product. Easily half of the improvement in my shaves I believe derives from the superior quality of a real shaving soap and badger hair brush for application thereof. The badger hair brush really helps to lift your whiskers and makes shaving easier because you do not need to press the blade against the skin to capture the whiskers. As to the blades which come with the product, since I have yet to use any others, I have no point of reference other than to say that these are straight razor blades - they are very, very sharp and therefore should be handled with care.Tips:You don't use a straight razor like a disposable multi-blade cartridge. Very light pressure is essential, otherwise you will tear your face up. As many others suggest, it should be the weight of the razor itself that does the cutting, not the pressure of your hand.Make small, controlled passes against the skin with the razor. It allows for better control of the razor. Don't worry about getting every follicle in a single pass, focus on maintaining the proper technique and building a sense of how much pressure/speed is appropriate.Be careful with the edges of the blade, they are not heavily rounded and can gouge the skin if you attempt to apply only the edge of the razor. Therefore, attempt to cut with the center area of the blade. You will cut yourself the first several times you use this razor. Nothing major - we aren't talking the bathroom scene from Airplane, but you will get some nicks. In my case, some of these may have been from preexisting razor bumps or ingrown hairs, however, the more you use this razor, the less blood you will draw and the less irritation you will feel afterward. I have noticed a substantial decrease in razor bumps and irritation of my skin after using this razor for several weeks despite having a closer shave than I could ever have achieved with a multi-blade or electric.Don't bother trying to squeeze multiple shaves out of a single-edge blade - I have done this, but have stopped. These blades are so cheap, literally pennies a blade, for sanitary concerns, the closest shave, and even cost, simply use a blade for a shave and then discard. With 120 blades included in the price, that's about 4 months worth of blades for a few dollars. In ConclusionThis is a totally decent product for the price. If you are looking for something that will impress your buddies, this probably isn't going to do it. If you are looking for a much closer shave with less irritation and a cheaper operating cost, this would be a great starting point. Maybe, at some point, down the road, I'll buy a true straight razor, but for right now, this works great and I no longer dread my morning shave. One final time, I must stress the importance of getting real shaving soap and a brush to apply it with. I can't emphasize that enough. I threw out my Gillette Fusion Extra-Sensitive Gel and gave my Mach3's away to a friend who still uses them. I'm never going back, except maybe for when I need to travel and use a carry-on only.I wish I had thought to try a straight razor earlier. 4
